The Scarborough Symphony Orchestra is made up of nearly 70 players, between them giving in excess of 6,000 hours of their time every year, preparing public performances.

They come from as far afield as Beverley, Helmsley & Guisborough. Rehearsals have an average attendance of about 95% and we currently present 5 public concerts per season.

Our ever-growing audiences seem to enjoy our enthusiastic music-making, as well as our innovative and varied programme building, combining lesser known works with popular favourites.

20% of the seats are sold in advance to holders of our Golden Tickets. We have a policy of encouraging young people to discover real music; student players do not have to pay a membership subscription and tickets to our concerts are free to children and full-time students.

Our Conductor

Shaun Matthew studied the tuba at the Junior Guildhall School of Music & Drama & Royal Northern College of Music from 1991-1995 under Stuart Roebuck and Andrew Duncan. He studied conducting at the RNCM from 1992 with Timothy Reynish and Edward Warren, and culminated in his being awarded the Mortimer Fruber Prize.

Since leaving the RNCM he has worked with many leading orchestras in the North of England, including the BBC Philharmonic, Stockport Symphony Orchestra, the Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra. Shaun has been Musical Director of the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra for 8 years. He has performed with many different ensembles as a tubist including Orquesta Timbala, Toolshed and many of the orchestras in the North of England.

Our Players

We are a friendly crowd of people who love making music together. We spend hours every week, not only rehearsing, but also practising individually to ensure we make our concerts as musically rewarding as possible for both us and our audience.

We have around 60 regular players in the orchestra. Our ages range from 15 to over 85 and we come from a wide area in North and East Yorkshire, with some players travelling long distances to attend rehearsals. Our ever-growing audiences seem to enjoy our enthusiastic music-making, as well as our innovative and varied programme building, combining lesser known works with popular favourites.

We have a policy of encouraging young people to discover real music; student players do not have to pay a membership subscription and tickets to our concerts are free to children and full-time students.

Joining Us

We are always delighted to welcome new members. We are currently looking for trombone, horn and trumpet players and also string players, especially violas and cellos. No orchestral experience necessary, but a minimum of approximately Grade 6/7 standard (or good sight-reading ability) is preferred.

Our Venue

We are very fortunate to be able to continue to make use of the excellent facilities at the Methodist Central Hall on Queen Street.

The staff and volunteers have all been extremely helpful, and we would like to extend our grateful thanks for making us feel so welcome.

As well as the main hall, there are plenty of rooms for orchestra, conductor and soloists, plus a large room beneath the Main Hall which is perfect for interval drinks and socialising. Free parking is available on site and there are municipal
car parks nearby, plus on-street parking on nearby Queen Street, Cross Street and Market Street.
